During the term of OS operation, many of identical duplicate data objects (files, blocks or sectors) accumulate on the hard drive volume. These data objects are distributed randomly over the all available space of the hard drive. This results in an inefficient use of storage resources. For certain procedures in the operating system these redundant data are essential. But for the backup, all redundant data objects can be eliminated very effectively and thus the storage usage can be more efficient. The de-duplication technology of DeviceImage ensures that data objects exist only once as original data and all redundant data are replaced by so-called pointer (reference) to the original data object.

Many commercially available backup-tools are using files as a data object for the reference. Only when two absolutely identical files are detected, the deduplication method can be used. DeviceImage, in contrary, offers a de-duplication functionality at the block- or sector level. This allows the deduplication-method to be used with much greater granularity. As a result, both the usage of storage and usage of bandwidth can be much more efficient.
